Data Hong Kong – An E-Bulletin
Data hk is a free resource that allows users to access and use open data from international, European, national, and local data portals. The resource provides access to over one million open data sets, with visualisations such as line graphs, cross sectional plots and maps. Data hk is a useful resource for businesses and individuals alike as it allows them to make better business decisions, whilst also allowing them to stay abreast of current trends and developments in the economy.
Under current statutory and common law, only personal data is protected by the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO). However, a proposed change to the definition of ‘personal data’ could potentially expand the scope of the PDPO to cover more forms of data that are collected about people. For example, a combination of data on a staff card, such as the individual’s name, company name, photograph and employee number, could be classified as personal data under the new definition and therefore require compliance measures to be taken in order to ensure that it is not disclosed unnecessarily or in breach of the PDPO.
Once it comes into effect, section 33 of the PDPO will prohibit the transfer of personal data out of Hong Kong. This e-bulletin considers the implications of this provision for employers who wish to transfer their employees’ personal data overseas, or store their personal data in other jurisdictions, such as cloud storage solutions.
