The Sidney Prize and Other Prizes Offered by the University
The sidney prize is a national award that recognises individuals or groups that have made an impact on Australia’s culture, society and economy. It is presented at a ceremony each year and is open to organisations and individuals both locally and internationally.
This year, the prize was awarded to the Black Lives Matter movement, an international organisation dedicated to promoting human rights and non-violence. The group was founded in the United States in 2013 by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi after George Zimmerman was acquitted of murdering black teenager Trayvon Martin.
Another important prize is the Sydney Peace Foundation’s annual Sidney Prize, which recognises individuals and groups that promote peace with justice and non-violence. This prize is open to both Australians and international organisations and is awarded on a national basis to individuals or groups who are active in the areas of peace and justice.
In addition to the Sidney Prize, there are a number of other prizes offered by the University and the wider community. For example, the Faculty of Arts has a number of prizes for graduating students and also the Sidney Black Memorial Engineering Prize for those who have just completed their degree.
There are also a number of other prizes that recognise the work of individuals or organisations and these can be useful for encouraging social change. For instance, New York Times columnist David Brooks awards the annual Sidney Award to the best long-form essay in politics and culture.
The award is a great way to encourage young people to take up social issues and become involved in tackling them, and can also help them to understand what they can do to make the world a better place.
A great example of this is the Sidney prize for investigative journalism in service of the common good, which is awarded each month to an individual or organisation that has done outstanding work in this area. In the past, winners have included the U.S. Hillman Prize for journalistic excellence, the Prospect Magazine Prize for investigative reporting and the Sidney Hillman Foundation’s annual Hillman Prize for journalism in the U.S.
There are a number of other prizes that are offered by the University and are a great way to celebrate and recognise the work of individuals or organisations in their field. For example, there is the MAK Halliday Postgraduate Research Prize for an individual who has made a significant contribution to linguistics research and scholarship.
In addition, the University offers a number of scholarships for students, as well as the Sidney Prize for the most excellent conference presentation or publication by a student in a discipline within linguistics. There are also many other prizes for students in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Business and Economics.
