The Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize is a biennial literary award for short fiction written by Australian and New Zealand writers, which was first awarded in 2007. It is one of the largest and most prestigious awards in the region, with a total prize pool of up to A$10,000 ($8,500). The judges consider submissions that embody an innovative approach to the concept of travel and that explore the interplay between people and their environments. In addition to the story itself, entrants are required to answer a question: ‘Does your piece of writing identify a specific community or experience?’. This is for the purposes of assessing whether the piece has been sensitively considered for its representation of a marginalised community or identity. The judges do not have to reveal their responses to the writers.
