Singapore Prizes
A Singapore prize is a reward given to a person or organisation for outstanding achievement. It may be a cash award, an honourary title or another form of recognition. The main purpose of the prize is to stimulate public interest in and support for the award recipient. The Singapore Literature Prize (SLP) is Singapore’s top literary prize with more than 150 past winners. It is open to authors who publish their works in any of the four official languages: Chinese, English, Malay, and Tamil. Works may be fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, translation, or comics/graphic novels.
The NUS History Prize was created in 2014 and is awarded every three years. Its inaugural winner was archaeologist John Miksic for his book Singapore And The Silk Road Of The Sea, 1300-1800. A senior NUS advisor told CNA there could be plans to expand the kind of works that can qualify for the prize. Using the example of movies such as 12 Years A Slave, he said history can sometimes be better told through other formats, such as fiction or even cartoons.
Prince William was in Singapore on Tuesday for the third annual Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, where five winners were honoured for their solutions to climate change and other environmental challenges. The prince, who walked the green carpet alongside host Hannah Waddingham, said that while the world faces many challenges, “hope is not lost”.
The winners of the award, which has been named after former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, were recognised for their innovations in the areas of nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination, and climate change. Celebrities such as actors Donnie Yen and Lana Condor, and Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin lent their voices to the event.
