SS Sidney Prizes For Investigative Reporting
The sidney prize is a monthly journalism award presented by the Sidney Hillman Foundation for investigative reporting in service of the common good. The awards are open to journalists in both the US and Canada.
SS Sidney Prize (USA)
The SS Sidney Prize is given for an outstanding investigative report in the United States published by an American newspaper, magazine, or online news site. The prize is awarded to a journalist for a project that has been deeply reported and has had significant impact on public policy and society. The prize is also given to a journalist for an outstanding piece of fiction or poetry that has a strong emphasis on social justice and demonstrates a deep commitment to ethical and responsible reporting.
SS Sidney Prize in the United States
The Sidney Prize for Investigative Reporting was established in 1990. It is a monthly award for the best news coverage that includes an in-depth, critical examination of a subject that has been overlooked by the media. It is awarded for work that is published in an American magazine, newspaper, on an online news site or blog, or broadcast by an American television or radio news outlet.
SS Sidney Prize for Canadian Journalism
The Sidney Award is a prize for the best investigative report published in Canada that has been deeply reported and has had significant impacts on public policy and society. The prize is awarded to a journalist who has published an outstanding piece of investigative reporting.
SS Sidney Scholarships for Undergraduate Students
The SS Sidney Scholarship is awarded to a student at the University of Sydney who has been disadvantaged in their studies or has written an undergraduate thesis that has been impacted by extenuating circumstances. The scholarship is intended to help the recipient gain access to research resources that they otherwise would not be able to afford, or to develop their skills and confidence in a field that they are interested in.
SS Sidney Prizes for Undergraduate Students
The following prizes are awarded to undergraduate students at the University of Sydney:
*Sydney Scholarship*
A $500 stipend is awarded to the winner of the SS Sidney Scholarship, and this is matched by $500 in cash to be shared among two other winners. The recipients of the scholarships are chosen on the basis of merit and equity grounds, and must be enrolled in a course at the University of Sydney that is appropriate to their qualifications.
*Sydney Prizes*
Awarded to the most outstanding undergraduate student in any area of study. This category is open to students from all areas of the University, and must be completed at the University of Sydney in order to qualify for entry into the competition.
SS Sidney Scholarship in the Arts
The SS Sidney Scholarship is given to the student of the Faculty of Arts who has been disadvantaged in their studies or who has written an undergraduate thesis that has been influenced by extenuating circumstances. The scholarship was established in 2014 by a donation from an alumni of the University and is to be administered by a committee consisting of a representative of the student body, the chair of the Department of History, and the Academic Director for Graduate Studies.
