The Hong Kong Prize for Science and Technology in 2019
The Hong Kong Prize is awarded to scientific researchers in recognition of their outstanding research achievements in science, as well as their influence on transformation of R&D outcomes in Hong Kong. The Laureates (individual or group) will receive HK$2 million sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited.
In 2019, five Hong Kong scientists won the prize including microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung and chemical engineer Gregory Winter who won in the Life Science category for their work on developing a novel method of detecting bacterial toxins. The winning papers have been published in the world’s leading journals. Other winners included Ng Siew Chien for her development of noninvasive tests for early diagnosis and timely intervention of gastrointestinal tract and autism spectrum disorders, and artificial intelligence and robotics awardees Zhang Hua, Chai Yang and Chen Shih-chi who made breakthroughs in phase engineering of nanomaterials, 3D micro- and nanofabrication, and innovative data and AI security technologies respectively.
In addition to the monetary prize, winning scientists will also receive an engraved gold medal. The prize is organised by the Society for Hong Kong Studies and endorsed by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation. It aims to promote Hong Kong’s technological and innovative atmosphere and further enhance the local scientific research community.
This year’s prize has attracted a total of 92 entries from members of the Academy of Social Sciences, the Hong Kong Association of University Teachers and Hong Kong Federation of Students’ Unions. Twenty-four were shortlisted after being assessed for their relevance to the theme, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis, citation of bibliography and footnotes, and overall assessment of quality. Among the shortlisted entries, nine came from Hong Kong which is the most representation from any city in the history of the prize.
The Hong Kong Arts Awards scheme has been conferring different awards to recognise veteran and up-and-coming arts practitioners, as well as individuals and organisations that actively participate in the promotion of local arts. The Hong Kong Arts Awards Ceremony was held at the ICC in Tsim Sha Tsui on October 24 to honour the winners and recognise their contributions to art education and promotion. The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Professor Wu Yin-yi. The event is also a platform for artists to showcase their works to the public. The ceremony was co-sponsored by Swire Group.
