The Sidney Prize and the Edelstein Prize
The sidney prize recognizes the work of outstanding students. Prizes are awarded in a number of fields. Some require students to apply; others do not. Students who win a prize will receive the award money and have their achievement recorded on their transcript. Most prizes are in recognition of academic excellence, but some are specifically for writing or research. In many cases students are able to apply for multiple prizes and some are given more than one award in a year.
This prize was established in honor of Yong K. Kim, A.B. ’92, J.D. ’95, through the generosity of his family and friends at and beyond HLS. The prize aims to encourage and recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship in the field of East Asian law, culture, or history. The winner will be a student who not only produces an excellent essay that exemplifies the quality of work required for the field, but also has made significant contributions to the life of the East Asian Legal Studies program. In addition, the prize will recognize a student who possesses Yong’s interest in and enthusiasm for fostering U.S.-East Asian understanding and plans a career that will further advance these interests.
Awarded to a student who has written an outstanding paper that examines a legal issue from an economic perspective. The student must be a student at the time of submission of the paper and must submit a copy of the thesis or dissertation for which the paper was written. In the case of a dissertation, the candidate must provide a signed statement from the professor under whose direction the dissertation was written, attesting that the paper meets the requirements for consideration for the Prize. See the Prize Submission Instructions page for additional details and a link to the application form.
Established in memory of Professor Philip Sidney Ardern, the prize is intended to promote study of Old and Middle English literature. The committee will select a paper that most closely meets Professor Ardern’s standards of excellence.
The Edelstein Prize, formerly the Dexter Prize, is presented to the author of an outstanding scholarly book on the history of technology published during the three years preceding the date of the award. The prize was established in 1968.
Awarded by the Society for the History of Technology in memory of its founder, Sidney Edelstein, and his commitment to excellence in scholarship on the history of technology. The prize, a cash award and a plaque, was established in 1968.
The Sidney Taylor Book Award was established in 2000 by alumnus Sidney Iwanter (B.A. ’71, History) in recognition of his own curiosity and desire to record the knowledge of one generation for the benefit of the next. This interest led him to secretly record the lectures of his professor, Harvey Goldberg. The prize carries on his legacy of recording the wealth of wisdom from one generation to the next.
