What is a Sydney Prize?
A sidney prize is an award that honors people who have made a significant contribution to society. These awards serve to recognize their efforts while also inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. There are a number of different prizes that can be won, each with its own set of requirements. The most common are the sidney prize for journalism and the sidney prize for a book. In addition to these, there are many other categories that can be awarded.
The Sydney Peace Prize is given to those who promote peace with justice and human rights. The winner is honoured at a ceremony in Sydney, Australia. This year the winner was the human rights movement Black Lives Matter. The group was founded in the US by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi after the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin.
In order to win a sidney prize, you need to write an outstanding piece of journalism that has appeared in the previous month. The deadline for nominations is the last day of each month. You can nominate your own work, or someone else’s. Those who are selected as winners receive $500, a bottle of union-made wine and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel.
The Sidney Hillman Prize has been given to journalists since 1950. It has been awarded monthly to “honor journalists who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in the public interest.” It is meant to honor discernment of a significant news story, resourcefulness and courage in reporting it, and skill in telling the story.
There are several other types of sidney prizes that can be won, such as the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize from Overland Magazine. The winner of this prize is awarded $4000 and their story will be published in Overland’s upcoming print issue. The two runners-up will each receive $500.
For more information on how to enter the prize, see the Overland website. You will need to subscribe in order to participate, but you can do so at a discounted rate. Those who are selected as winners will be asked to identify whether their entry takes up the voice or experience of a particular marginalised identity.
The University of Sydney’s annual literary prizes date back to bequests received at the beginning of the 20th century. The University offers a variety of prizes for submissions in written form, including essays and poems. Many of these are for undergraduate students, but the university also hosts several postgraduate scholarships. In total, there are more than 80 scholarships and fellowships available for a variety of fields of study. All scholarship applications are required to be submitted online and all written submissions must be in English. Applicants must also provide a copy of their identification documents. The submissions should be labelled with a pseudonym or anonymously, in accordance with the University’s policy on anonymity and privacy. Those who are awarded a prize will be required to sign a copyright release form.
